You may have heard people talking about indirect costs in the news. But what does that actually mean—and why does it matter? Our Chief Science Officer Liz Dr. Liz Marnik (@sciencewhizliz) breaks down what indirect costs are and why they’re essential for research in the U.S.
Here’s something important to know: Each research institution submits paperwork to the government to figure out their specific indirect cost rate. This rate is reviewed, audited, and negotiated before it’s officially approved.
Indirect costs are added on top of regular grant funding. They help pay for the things that make research possible but aren’t research supplies or salaries for the staff on the project. Things like electricity, lab space, equipment upkeep and shared administrative and maintenance staff. These are behind-the-scenes costs, but they’re absolutely necessary to get the science done!
