Camille Seaberry, MPS, Contributing Writer

DataHaven and University of Maryland, Baltimore County
Baltimore, MD

Camille Seaberry is a professional data nerd. As a senior research associate at DataHaven, a nonprofit based in New Haven, CT, she does data analysis, data science, and data visualization to help residents and organizations better understand their communities through data. Much of this involves studying patterns and histories of segregation and inequality, and the impacts those have on our well-being today.

Camille earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Yale University and a master’s of professional studies in data science from University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her data science capstone was a set of deep learning models to detect and categorize surveillance cameras in street view images as a potential tool for counter-surveillance. She soon after joined UMBC’s faculty, teaching data visualization to graduate students in geographic information systems (GIS).

Most days, Camille writes more code than English. She is very excited about building tools to help people do better research. She will gladly talk your ear off about the politics of data collection and surveillance, open source software as anarchism in everyday life, and how maps can both help and harm communities. She aims to center fellow Black and LGBTQ people in all her work.
