Election Day is getting close! How can I make sure my mail-in ballot counts?

Social and Racial Justice

A: With only 3 weeks until November 3rd, it’s such an important time to check and double check the rules and deadlines.

First, check out our September post for tips and tricks on completing and sending in your mail-in ballot.

Next, CHECK THOSE DEADLINES! If you already requested your mail-in ballot, but haven’t received it, make sure you check in with your local election office. They should be able to help you figure out if the ballot is on its way or if there was a problem with your request.

Of course, if you’ve already sent your ballot, now it’s time to track it. As NBC News outlines (link below), most states have a simple tracking system that allow you to check if it was received. However, there are now five states and many counties that offer more detailed tracking, sort of like watching a UPS package make its way to your house! If you are voting by mail, make sure you know what the tracking system is for your county, and how to verify that it’s been safely received before the deadline.

So, what if there IS an issue? You have a few options. FIRST you should get in touch with your local election office ASAP – they should be able to tell you the best way to make sure your ballot counts. Depending on timing, you might be able to request a replacement or void your ballot and vote in person – yet another reason to send your ballot as soon as possible, giving you time to work out any problems.

We might sound like a broken record, but the key to mail-in voting is doing it early, doing it carefully, and checking with your local election rules every step of the way. Remember, it’s already Election Season – cast your vote now!

Stay safe, stay sane.

With love,
Those Nerdy Girls

**P.S. Friendly reminder, you can STILL register to vote in MANY states! Check out vote.gov.
