On October 11th, we celebrated International Day of the Girl!

Social and Racial Justice

This celebration was started by the United Nations to “recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.”

The International Day of the Girl:

✊ Focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face

✊ Promotes girls’ empowerment

✊ Works to protect and fulfill their human rights

This year’s theme is “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights.”

💡Did you know that:
Child marriage violates every child’s right to reach their full potential, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include a target to eliminate it by 2030.
The United Nations (UN) estimates the number of child brides to be around 650 million globally today, which includes girls under 18 years who are already married, and those who are adults now but were married as children.

The UN states that “Together we can end child marriage and ensure every girl has the freedom to choose her own future – and the opportunity to thrive”, and asks us to stand with girls by

✅ Raising our voices for girls’ rights.

✅ Amplifying girls’ voices and leadership, to help ensure that girls are part of the decisions that affect their lives and futures.

✅ Championing the solutions that help girls stay in school, stay safe and shape their own futures.

✅ Challenging the harmful norms that continue to drive child marriage in communities around the world.

✅Advocating for laws, policies, and investments that prevent child marriage and uphold girls’ rights.
