This past week brought us exciting news with the long-awaited emergency authorization of COVID vaccines for kids ages 5-11 in the United States. We know that many of our readers (and many of Those Nerdy Girls, too) are jubilant that their kids are finally eligible, and in fact some have already received their first doses!
Tonight, though, we want to switch gears as we observe a grim milestone in the pandemic.
According to the Coronavirus Resource Center at Johns Hopkins University, the United States recently surpassed 750,000 deaths from COVID (as of November 6th, in fact, the number has risen to 754,000).
Seven hundred and fifty thousand is a staggering number of lives lost. Three quarters of a million people. But they are not just numbers. They were our parents, partners, children, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles. They were our co-workers, classmates, and friends. And many were the brave health care workers and first responders who lost their own lives after working to save others.
Those Nerdy Girls mourn these lost lives and renew our commitment to spreading facts and science about COVID so that we can help end this pandemic.
In the comments below, we invite our readers to share the names of any friends or family they have lost to COVID. Please tell us about them so we can honor their memories.
May these 750,000 souls rest in peace, and may their memories be a blessing.
