August Burns, PA, MPH, LM is a retired physician assistant, midwife, international consultant, and author who has specialized in teaching women about their bodies and how to care for themselves. With 34 years of experience in all aspects of women’s health, she is a fierce defender of women’s rights and health. In addition to 25 years of clinical work with Planned Parenthood and in private practice, she has had the privilege of working with women around the world as a consultant for numerous international organizations, including USAID and the World Health Organization.

Most recently she served as the Executive Director of Grounds for Health, where she developed and directed programs in cervical cancer prevention in five countries with a focus on training health care providers in low-tech solutions for hard-to-reach populations. She is also a contributor to Our Bodies Ourselves and a co-author of Where Women Have No Doctor, a manual for the village health worker covering all aspects of women’s health and well-being now translated into over 45 languages and in use around the world.
